Matthew
joined the Appliance Studio in July 2001.
A
psychologist by training, he contributes across all our fields
of activity. He's a passionate believer in the cross-disciplinary
working that'll be required to harness the potential power
of computers, without making them difficult to use. He uses
his own understanding of human psychology to help create versatile
devices which hide unnecessary complexity behind intuitive,
intelligible interfaces.
Matthew previously worked for two hi-tech Oxford University spin-offs. As head
of marketing and sales with OXIVA at the Oxford Centre for Innovation, he worked
with radiographers to formulate and implement a strategy for introducing mammogram
image processing software to the medical industry. Subsequently he helped develop
a bespoke version of XML in C++ at DecisionSoft.
Graduating from Sheffield University with a first in Psychology, Matthew went
on to complete his PhD thesis on 3D vision at Oxford University. During his
studies he fostered a keen interest in intelligent computing, attending lectures
and seminars on computer vision and artificial intelligence.
In his spare time, Matthew studies mathematics with the Open University, takes
Spanish evening classes and is teaching himself to play classical guitar.
